One of the main criticisms aimed at Creedence Clearwater Revival—and its later offshoot, Creedence Clearwater Revisited—is that the musicians came from California while building their identity around the American South. Their songs frequently reference the Mississippi River, bayous, catfish, and other Louisiana-inspired imagery.

Because of those themes, CCR is often associated with Southern rock. Some fans of the genre reject that label, arguing that the band neither came from the South nor fully captured the authentic Southern-rock sound, which has led them to view CCR as overrated.
