Noemi lingered where she stood, uncertainty gripping her. Was she really considering following a wolf? The very thought sounded reckless. Wolves were powerful predators, and she was completely alone on this deserted shoreline.
“Get a hold of yourself,” she muttered under her breath. “It’s a wild animal, not something you should trust.”
Drawing a slow breath, she rose to her feet. The wolf glanced back at her before setting off once more. It walked at an unhurried pace, pausing every few steps as though checking that she was still behind it. It almost seemed to expect her to come.
She remained frozen, torn between turning back and giving in to her curiosity.
Then the wind carried a sound across the beach.
A weak, anguished cry echoed from somewhere in the distance.
Noemi’s pulse spiked. Whatever the wolf wanted, it wasn’t alone.
