The Otterhound ranks among the most ancient canine breeds developed in Britain. These dogs are typically relaxed and good-natured, though that should not be mistaken for a lack of energy. With an impressive appetite and an exceptional talent for locating snacks, they require careful management of food storage. Otterhounds are famously independent thinkers and prefer to follow their own instincts; if the urge to roam or track prey strikes, flimsy barriers or electric fencing are unlikely to contain them. While they are reliable at alerting their owners to unusual activity, they are not true protection dogs. That said, if they or their loved ones are threatened, they will respond with full determination and courage.
