The Australian Shepherd, often called an “Aussie,” is a mid-range dog breed that, contrary to its name, was established in the western regions of the United States during the 1800s. Adults generally fall within a weight range of 30 to 65 pounds and reach a height of about 17 to 26 inches. Aussies are known for their intense energy levels and demand constant engagement from their handlers. Many individuals still display strong herding instincts passed down from their working ancestors. They thrive when given jobs or challenges, and long periods spent indoors can quickly lead to restlessness and frustration, making apartment living a poor fit. Originally bred for ranch work, they are often happiest outdoors and active rather than spending long, idle hours with the household.
