U2 never quite reached the same level as some of the era’s most celebrated rock bands. Despite touring extensively throughout the 1980s, they often seemed like a secondary act rather than the defining force their reputation suggests.
Bono has a powerful voice, and the band has produced numerous successful singles. Even so, when compared with groups such as The Who, some listeners believe U2’s legendary status is overstated.
