Manchester By The Sea Will Break Anyone’s Heart
Manchester by the Sea is not a film designed for easy entertainment or a simple, uplifting viewing experience. Written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan, the drama follows Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck), a withdrawn man whose life is disrupted when he must return to his hometown following the unexpected death of his older brother.
Upon arriving, Lee discovers that he has been named guardian of his teenage nephew, forcing him to reconnect with a place filled with painful memories. As he faces the responsibilities of the present, he is also forced to confront a devastating tragedy from his past that continues to shape his life. Casey Affleck’s deeply emotional performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor, while Lonergan received the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
