It is important to understand the potential health issues associated with any breed of dog before bringing one into your home. In many cases, a purebred pup will come with certain hereditary conditions that can be managed but not necessarily cured. However, when it comes to a mutt or mixed-breed dog, there are no guarantees regarding what kind of genetic make-up he may have and along with that, the potential for some health issues.

The good news is that because no two pups of the same mix will have exactly the same genes (just as with humans), you may also get lucky and end up with an extremely healthy pooch as opposed to one who’s prone to illnesses. The only way to know for sure is through regular visits to the vet’s office so that any emerging health problems may be detected and dealt with early on.

Still, there are “unknowns” that come along with adopting a mutt and these must be taken into consideration prior to making the commitment of becoming a pet parent. Here are some common ailments which tend to affect certain breeds more than others:

•Skin Conditions – These are very common in dogs especially those that are Remington Terrier mixes and Maltese mixes which often suffer from skin allergies or mites due to their thick coats;

•Ear Infections – Again this usually has something to do with fur density i.e Labrador Retriever mixes or Poodle mixes;

•Hip Dysplasia – This orthopedic issue tends to run in larger breeds such as German Shepherd mixes or Bulldog mixes;

•Heart Problems: Heart murmur and/or distension is most likely found in Havanesemixes, Cocker Spanielmixes as well as Boxer combos;

•Eye Disorders & Cataracts – Affecting breeds like Siberian Huskymixtures or Beaglemixtures;

•Gastrointestinal Issues – Especially prevalent incombinations involving Bulldogs, Dachshundsand Miniature Schnauzers.

Overall, it’s highly recommended that once you bring your pup home from his new home you should contact your veterinarian immediately so they can start monitoring their health status and provide treatments against common parasites such as roundworms and fleas which can be present in all puppies despite their outer appearance (don’t assume they’re clean!). Additionally, getting regular shots and check-ups is always wise regardless of breed mix so if possible avoid skipping them even during busy times!
